"We're on generator because of hurricane Helene and I want to use my living room AC and I've got my SoftStartUp hooked to my 2200-watt generator. It softens the punch of load that the air conditioners have so that it does not stall my 2200-watt generator!"

FAQ

+

Power and Connection IssuesQ1: The unit does not turn on. What should I do?Answer: Verify that the power supply is properly connected. Check that the circuit breaker or fuse is not tripped. Ensure correct wiring according to the installation guide. Confirm voltage compatibility (240V).

Q2: The LED indicators are not lighting up. What could be the issue?Answer: Ensure proper wiring and secure connections. Check for a blown fuse or tripped breaker. Confirm power is reaching the connection terminals.

Startup and Performance IssuesQ3: My well pump still experiences high inrush current when tested with a clamp meter.Answer: Double-check wiring connections. Verify the SoftStart Well Pump™ is securely grounded. Ensure the correct model is used for your system (SSWP is for ½ to 3 ½ HP 240v Systems). You could be getting the benefit of reduced in-rush without the clamp meter being able to detect it. Most clamp meters cannot detect the in-rush current drop at is happens in milliseconds. There are special in-rush clamp meters for this type of testing. If the green light is on and the pump is working, your unit is working fine.

Q4: My generator shuts down when starting my well pump.Answer: Ensure the 240v generator output meets the minimum wattage requirement (typically 3,000 Watts). Check that the generator is properly grounded.

Q5: My system runs fine on electric grid power but struggles with a generator.Answer: Confirm that the generator provides stable voltage without excessive fluctuation. Reduce the load by turning off other appliances. Try re-setting the generator and restarting the system.

Installation and Wiring IssuesQ6: The system does not recognize the SoftStart Well Pump™. What should I do?Answer: Verify that all connections match the wiring diagram exactly. Re-check wiring and refer to installation guides. Ensure the Ground connections are properly installed.

Q7: My well pump worked before installation, but now it will not start.Answer: Check for any loose or disconnected wires. Temporarily remove the SoftStart Well Pump™ and reconnect the system to its original wiring to test.

Well Pump Soft Start Installation With Circuit Breaker Panel

Section Image

FOR 120/240 VOLT WELL PUMPS WITH 2-, 3- OR 4-WIRE CONNECTION.

SoftStart Well Pump™ twistlock wire connectors accommodate 12 and 14 gauge solid wiring.

  1. Turn off all power to the pump and confirm it’s off. Never work on live circuits.
  2. Confirm well pump is 120V or 240V. If circuit breaker is a double-wide 2-pole breaker (refer to A), then it is a 240V well pump.
  3. Locate the wire from the circuit breaker panel going to the pressure switch feeding the well pump.
  4. Find a good location on the wall to install SSWP with appropriate screws.
  5. Cut the Romex wire near the center of the SSWP box.
  6. Strip back approximately 1” of the outer cable sheath.
  7. Strip back approximately 3/16” of the coverings on the black and red wires. NOTE: Electrical code allows black and white wires to be used for 2-pole 240-volt service as along as the white wire is marked with black tape at the circuit breaker.
  8. If using 14-gauge solid Romex wire, don’t remove the spring clamps in twist-lock connectors (refer to B).
  9. If using thicker 12-gauge solid Romex wire, back the terminal screws out to remove the spring clamps. Then tighten terminal screws onto wires.
  10. Assemble the Blue connector to the wire from the Circuit Breaker Panel or Pump Disconnect Switch (shown in diagram).
  11. Assemble the Gray connector to the wire going to the pump’s Pressure Switch.
  12. Connect the SSWP to the new Blue and Gray connectors that were just wired.
  13. Turn power on and check LED Indicator Sequence for proper startup and operation.

Well Pump Soft Start Installation With 120V Sources (Low Amperage)

Section Image

To install SoftStart Well Pump™ (SSWP) to 120VAC/15 or 20-amp power source, you must build a power cord with the supplied blue PowerCon twistlock connector and a 15-amp power plug.

  2. Find a good location to install SSWP with appropriate fasteners.
  3. Obtain a NEMA 5-15P male plug (with 3 straight prongs – purchased separately).
  4. Obtain 14- or 12-gauge cable to match pump HP size (see chart at left). If plugging into a generator, be sure cable length is long enough to keep generator exhaust way from living areas (max. 25-ft. length if possible).
  5. Connect one end of cable wires to NEMA 5-15P male plug. See plug wiring diagram at left (Step 5).
  6. Disassemble the BLUE PowerCon connector and connect the other end of power cable wires to BLUE PowerCon connector (shown below). See connector wiring diagram at left (Step 6).
  7. Reassemble BLUE PowerCon connector.
  8. Measure and cut a second length of power cable to run between SSWP location and the pump’s Pressure Switch.
  9. Repeat procedures in Step 6 using the WHITE PowerCon connector (Step 9).
  10. Connect other end of WHITE PowerCon connector cable to Pressure Switch.
  11. Complete all other pump system electrical connections and test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers! Click to see all FAQs

What is the SoftStartUp™ soft starter and how does it work?

The SoftStartUp is an electrical soft start device that helps to reduce the amount of power your appliances need when they start up. It’s especially good for things like air conditioners, refrigerators and microwaves that use a lot of power at startup.

How do I know if I need a SoftStartUp for my RV?

If you’ve had issues with your A/C starting up, or other appliances shutting off when the A/C kicks in, then a SoftStartUp could be a big help. It smooths out the power demand so everything runs better together.

How quickly will I notice the benefits of installing a SoftStartUp?

You should notice the benefits immediately after installation. When you start an appliance, there should be no more dimming lights or tripped breakers, showing that the SoftStartUp is doing its job right from the get-go.

How do I know if the SoftStartUp is working correctly?

Look at the LED indicators on your SoftStartUp unit after installation. Two steady green lights indicate a 50-amp service is being used, and a single green light indicates that a 30-amp source is being used. Also, you should notice a smoother start when turning on high-demand appliances, with no flickering lights or tripped breakers, indicating that the inrush current has been effectively managed.

What should I do if my SoftStartUp is not showing any LED indicators after installation?

If the LEDs are not lighting up, first check all connections to make sure they’re secure and correct. Also, verify that the campground power supply is functioning properly. If everything seems in order but the unit still isn’t working, contact our customer service for further assistance.

Will the SoftStartUp reduce the power consumption of my RV appliances?

The SoftStartUp does not decrease the power used by your appliances during normal operation, which is actually beneficial. Each appliance has a specific running current necessary for proper function. The SoftStartUp specifically addresses the surge of power needed at startup, reducing its impact to ensure seamless operation of your devices on the same electrical circuit.

What air conditioning start-up issues does a SoftStartUp™ RV soft starter solve for RV enthusiasts?

SoftStartUp effectively smooths-out power fluctuations, ensuring your RV’s air conditioner starts seamlessly without overloading your generator or campground power source and causing it to shut off.
